What I Saw on My Way

Mississauga, Ontario

Going at a slightly faster clip than myself was a senior man with his dog in the ravine. It was hard to avoid him as he and his pet passed by me.

“How are you?” I asked.

“Great! I don’t like those hot, hot, hot days. This (weather) is just fine. And the leaves... (referring to the fall colours).”

He wasn’t at all bitter, so I admired that. Of course I was also observant of the leaves without the chlorophyll. It’s colourful. There is a big hype about Halloween. Further on with my afternoon stepping I took darshan of a lot of the ghoulish themes in front of people’s homes. I also couldn’t help but adoring a clump of trees with their roots exposed along a slope. Those roots were like the coils of the Kaliya snake who wrapped himself around young Krishna.

I don’t mind these reminders.

Once I came to ground level through residential areas, such as on Bathurst I came upon some historic plaques of at least two famous people. Lorne Green was a famous Canadian actor who resided in one of the units. He was loved for his part in the TV series “Bonanza” back in the day. Ernest Hemingway, noted author of many classic works, also lived on this street for a period. I also observed several orthodox Jewish men in black.

By this time Nityananda, who hails from the Punjab, had picked me up so we could advance travel to Mississauga for kirtan. He asked questions about the sikhas, tufts of hair on the side of the head as opposed to the one Vaishnavas bear on the back of the head. He was also curious about the tassle-like threads men have at their waist level resembling somewhat the brahmin threads we wear.
