Getting A Taste of Surrey

Surrey, British Columbia
It is stereotypical to say Surrey is an unsafe place. But people do say if you are part of a gang then you see and engage in plenty of crime. I went to Surrey today to a large retail complex where you have the very popular “Aggarwal Sweets.” I certainly did not detect a derelict feeling about the city.
Did I go for the sweets? No! I'm not so keen on sugar of any kind. I confess to some aloo gobi (cauliflower potato curry), dahl, absolutely a delicious lentil soup, roti (you know that one) — all prepared on the premise in this vegetarian eatery. All prepared with bhakti.
Two brothers came from Delhi to Canada and made this great business for themselves. When you see and feel their great smiles you know that their optimism is what made it a success. They came in 2005. Now 20 years later, their food outlet has exploded. Both brothers have been life-long anti-meat dietary chefs.
I'll compare this neighbourhood in Surrey to yesterday's visit in the east-end downtown of Vancouver. Maine & Hastings is notorious for drugs, violence, all things not good, although on the whole, Vancouver is a darn nice city.
In this world you will never find perfection. The Gita states it in Sanskrit “sad” and “asad” (good and bad elements), “dukha” (distress), and “asasvatam” (temporary). Krishna's words suggest not to invest in matter like so many people do, or another way to put it is to re-direct energies. Energy is great so long as you know where to point it.
This day was a drizzly one and that is quite commonly felt when you go for a stroll in British Columbia.
