High Light Low Light

Every year something marvelous happens amongst the devotees globally. Home visits are made where people of the Vaishnava tradition invite devotees for some kirtan, words of wisdom, prasadam, but the highlight is the low light. Small dhiyas or candles are lit and offered to the images of Yasoda and baby Krishna. Each and every guest gets the opportunity to present a light. House lights are low to get the maximum effect of watching bobbing little flames set before the image or picture.

I recall when I began my U.S. walk starting from Boston, then coming through New York, Manhattan, where devotees from the Brooklyn ashram were holding such a simple but devotional offering in the public. Passersby were encouraged to take a dhiya in their right palm and wave circles in the air directed to divine mother and son. By the time I arrived some total but curious strangers were participating. It was for them a sensation.

The additional treat to my making an offering of light to the deities was to go to Tompkins Square Park. And the exciting location to go to is the elm tree under its leaves and branches. This is a true pilgrimage site. Me and my walking team put our arms around it, as it was here that in 1965/66 the registration took place for approving ISKCON's benevolent activities.

Most important about this season is that people open up to the concept of God being attracted to love.
