VISHNU

VISHNU

I was walking Highway 2 in 2012

A motorist pulled over his engine with valves

“A ride? I was just checking”

I said, “Thanks, but I am trekking”

“Are you a follower of Buddha?”

I said, “Krishna and not Judah”

“Oh! Vishnu? In that vein?”

I indicated it was that chain

He was kind to offer me a ride

But I was committed to my stride

He got me thinking though

About God who always gives a glow

Of Vishnu, the massive man of blue

An attractive deva that blesses you

He appeared at Krishna’s divine birth

Deciding to come to Earth

Vishnu has these extra limbs

Often lies on water choosing not to swim

Is he polymelia with defects?

Is it painful, the extra arms from his chest?

No, not a chance, those additions

Indicate opulences of plural magicians

He is a mystic with special powers

That are very far beyond ours

With each arm there is a symbol

Talismans mightier than any wimble

The club for chastisement, a wheel to cut

A lotus for beauty, a conch for what?

To produce a sound of support

For Vishnu offers real comfort

A cosmic male who happens to be pregnant

Defying nature, a pastime rather pleasant

Holding in his belly the seed of existence

A functioning of awesome transcendence

The Alpha and Omega, both male and female

Whose every endeavour does not fail

He is big but fits into your heart

The origins of the elements – the start

The companion of Lakshmi, the goddess

And the one who makes us lucid and modest

– By Bhaktimarga Swami
