Getting Things Done

Yorkville, Toronto

Three young men came to Prabhupada’s quarters where I stay to wrap up the day. I asked for some help, the essential reason why they came. In their language they say, “I came to get some mercy.”

So for the three — Aaryan, Ayush and Nityananda — I asked one to massage the legs. It would enhance chances for a better night’s sleep. To another I asked if he could fetch some warm water with epsom salts in a bucket for soaking those feet. The third person I asked if he didn’t mind just sitting to listen as I read a page or two from Joshua Greene’s “Swami In A Strange Land,” a biography on the life of Prabhupada.

My reading got slightly interrupted. A call came in from young Vascaspati who’s working on a script about the imminent Chaitanya, the great ascetic and father of kirtan for this dark age, Kali. We spoke about the project and how to proceed.

It was a day, rewarding, as a number of things got accomplished. I must admit to being somewhat cranky over certain matters. They might be trivial ones, but attention was needed to address them. “Why is that picture hanging crooked?” “Can’t those drapes in the room get fixed?” “Why do people not close the door properly?” “Who was it that has not placed their shoes in the shoe shelf where they belong?”

In my irritability I felt justified because someone needs to be on top of the situations. I give Jiva Doya, our temple ashram commander, tips on such details. He listens very well and responds quite responsibly.

I can’t complain about the mostly young people who are residents. They are fine folks. That includes Alex who took to repairing the drapes. After the affairs of the day the assistants came, the three, putting mind at ease. Hare Krishna!
