Winnipeg, Manitoba

The flight to Winnipeg from Toronto was the first one ever, for me, where we encountered no turbulence in the air. There was no sudden jerk or jump from gusts of wind, no currents twisting about. It was a smooth sailing in the air.

What also was cool was meeting Mr. and Mrs. Mac Donald. We started talking in the queue at Porter Airlines at the Toronto Airport for check in, then later at the gate for departure, then finally at the Winnipeg Airport for luggage pick up. This sweet couple, married for 60 years, are from the town where I first met Krishna monks in ’72. They are both educators, principals of schools - he at a secondary and she at elementary. I love their wit and humour. I gifted them with my book, “The Saffron Path,” detailing all of my pedestrian pastimes.

Oh! I forgot to mention the name of the town. Sudbury, nickel capital of the world, and where cousins of mine owned and ran a popular ranch.

I was happy to be back in Winnipeg. It has been a year since devotees secured a building as a temple. And they have done well. Membership has increased since then and fair-sized festivals honouring Krishna have taken place. There I met Vrnda and Visvambhar Kroa, who are the initiators of this great project. Vrnda, a native of Canada, has been in Winnipeg for decades. Vish (for short) came as new immigrants from India along with wife Maha Sundari. They have three sons, healthy and helpful.
