MONKEYS WITH BLUE BUTTS

Sunday, April 20th, 2025

Durban, South Africa

I took a break from the circular walk around Chatsworth temple just to sit right there and become comfortable with not only my butt, but to concentrate on my mantras that I usually do simultaneously to my stepping. Before I knew it, I was surrounded by a family of monkeys with blue asses. This breed I found not only to be fun, but pretty in their behinds. It reminded me of the colour of robins’ eggs, a gorgeous tone.

Now, monkeys rarely sit still, even for a photo shoot. The first one out of the family then ran away, revealed what I thought was the result of being ‘Holied’ by blue powder like the stuff that sprayed like colour dust at a Hindu fall festival, Holi.

Anyways, these guys were cute, and I admit, so were their asses to some extent, oh Great Creator, but they were not aggressive monkeys like the mischievous ones in Vrindavan, India. All glories to them. They took to the trees.

I was happy to partake in a fire ceremony after that. I initiated 3 candidates, Girisha became Gitanjali.  Ofenste became Om Krishna.  And Krishnapriya took the name Kusum Sarovara.  Initiation is a serious step in devotional life. It means to be very human-spiritual.  No more monkey business.

I had some fine time with godbrother Indradhyumna Swami just before our final performance of Vamana, our best yet. What a bunch of incredible troupers.
