Honolulu, Hawaii
There was a strong desire on behalf of the management of Iskcon for me to present the workshop on Kirtan Standards. I concurred. Within 2 energetic hours, I was able to, by the grace of God, cover all the material on the subject during the morning program. It is educational from the perspective that guidelines were definitely established by our founder, Srila Prabhupada. That is a theme I carry throughout the presentation, in addition to the theme of inclusivity.
Kirtan is for everyone, and all people who enter into this su sukhan Kartum avyayam (Gita 9.2) get joyfully engaged in the process. In fact, as a way to fold morning and evening together, I was requested to deliver the Sunday talk wherein I made the point of the happy expression that chanting sessions have to offer.
There had been complaints that the Sunday Kirtans in Honolulu were a bit too much on the high decibel level. It has been a recurring complaint world-wide and the Kirtan Standard workshop covers this issue. I was honoured to be asked to lead the vening chant and with my musical support team, we were able to pull off a fairly melodic and not too loud Kirtan, successfully.
It was also a privilege to get sponsors for the Gita distribution program during what’s called the Prabhupada Book Marathon. It was not the intent of the community here to participate in this global marathon. I guess it is a disadvantage to be isolated like those on the Hawaiian Islands. The tally showed that 300 Gitas got sponsored by those who attended the blissful Sunday program.
