MAYA'S POWERS FOR TODAY

Our bus drivers, of which there are four licensed, have had to struggle through rain and electric storms, gloomy skies from forest fires and swarms of shad flies (mayflies) during the night. Drivers like Krishnapriya are real heroes that take up such challenging tasks.

Meanwhile I'm having some of the best sleep in my life. I attribute this to the constant vibration of the bus's movement, the humming sound and the feeling of safety from the competent drivers.

Our show at the University of Manitoba in co-ordination with the Hindu student organization was phenomenal. Sitting next to me watching our cultural event of dance, drama and kirtan was religious writer, Josiah Neufeld, who happens to be the only religious editor for any newspaper in Canada. That newspaper is the Winnipeg Free Press. He told me it was enjoyable and I believe he felt a strong sense of the community spirit about our people.

I was quite surprised at the attendance. Within ten days, Visvambhara, the ISKCON leader, and his team drummed up the interest to have 450 folks come for the fun. Our youthful performers adapted quickly to the environment. Although a large auditorium, it lacked dressing rooms, backdrops, proper lighting and no stage wings. Intuitively adjustments were made.

When all the preparations were taking place for the show, I squeezed in a Gita Zoom class, produced a video for reciting a poem for departed godbrother, Kratu, and a video promotion for Nanaimo's Chariot Fest. The service in the Bus Culture is engaging which is the best way to stave off maya, the illusory energy. Maya, after all has power, which registers as temptation, as fire, as rain, as shad flies, just about everything we experience in this vast mundane world.
