HISTORY IN THE AIR

Halifax, Nova Scotia
“Breathing in the air of the ocean, like the Atlantic, where I am now, is most refreshing. I was born and raised near the Great Lakes where there is only sweet water in the atmosphere. It is different, nevertheless exhilarating. Both are good.
A number of us took to Halifax’s Harbourfront to take in the sun’s rays and the ocean’s air. For the early settlers from Europe, the location of this Port Authority was the entranceway for many into the heartland of Canada. Lots of history here. One of the details of that rich history was during the First World War when two ships collided, one of them carrying explosive cargo, causing a mass devastation and flattening half the city. Within the same decade the Titanic mishap occurred. Between these two events Halifax and St. John’s, Newfoundland, were occupied in dealing with hundreds of dead victims.
While walking along the waterfront I was thinking that many of those passersby may not be aware of the gravity of this place, since it was over one hundred years ago. I suppose most of us walk in ignorance or get about on wheels unaware of what happy and sad times came through.
Back at the temple it was exciting to see the arrival of Abhay Charan, the man from Montreal who brings with him the chariot for many a Chariot Fest, Ratha-yatra. Other folks have arrived from Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island to partake in weekend bliss. It calls for overcast weather tomorrow and that is not of major concern. Rain is.
This outdoor event is always like a game of gamble but that’s what to expect from life’s existence. It should make us strong.
