CHALLENGES IN CHICAGO

Chicago, Illinois

Today is Father's Day and the following day will be Summer Solstice, when the sun appears to be waxed. Despite these auspicious landmarks on our calendar, at least one item occurred that didn't seem too pleasant. As our two buses were plowing their way through, one behind the other, our newer conveyance in the front hit a deer and ended its life. This is not uncommon. They say that in the States deer crossing is the major cause of vehicle accidents.

My view, however, is that the high speed monsters man has created, is the cause of death on the road.

It was dawn (when deer and moose get out of the bush) and when the accident took place. The two bus drivers pulled over, when some moments of deeper thought took place among the passengers. Naturally the maha mantra was implemented. Most of our bus residents were still asleep.

Fast forward now. The Chariot Fest had proceeded with the 11:30 am start. Chandramali Swami began the chant and the wheels of the Ratha (chariot) rolled near the shoreline of Lake Michigan in Chicago. As the procession was able to complete its course, the ominous clouds above us released some of their weight and the wetness of the day persisted. Regardless, the show must go on, and our troupe made it to the stage. The tents for the audience had been placed a distance from the stage, to accommodate kirtan dancing, I suppose, but this proved a disconnect between the audience and performers.

I sat with the audience, was disturbed by the chatter and inattention. I raised my voice. “These young folks worked hard and travelled many hours (13 to be exact) just to perform for you. Have some respect!”

Well, it quieted them miraculously. They got the message and enjoyed.
