English Bay, Vancouver

Every kirtan must have a drum. It triggers dancing. It expresses the heart beat. It keeps rhythm. It becomes a beautiful work-out. And a work-in, the drum, particularly, the mrdunga drum, has an attractive body. It beckons you. It calls you to come forth. For that matter, any drum tells, “Come and play with me. Try me out! We can produce some beautiful music together.” That beat is like a breath. It gives life. It is life.

I hear Ringo Starr. I hear the damaru of Lord Shiva. It makes him go crazy. There is no greater joy executing the dance of destruction. It gets and seen by the Universe.

Now, today, how the drum plays out — we went to visit Sunny. He has this beautiful home under construction by English Bay. He asked us to come and bless his home. That blessing translates as, “Let's chant and get the good vibes permeating through every room in the house.”

So, it all started by sitting on a chair and it dawned on me that we didn't bring a drum. I started by looking around the room and so I spotted what I thought could work. On its side with a lid on was this orange bucket from a paint store. I thought it could do. I picked it up and pressed the lid on tight. It worked. The chant commenced and we all were in a stream of happiness.

I once played a beat on an empty box. Another time I played a refrigerator to the sound of the maha mantra. Such bliss!
