A Holy Hallowed Day

Today is the official day for Hallowe’en and I know for certain that some temples in Canada are arranging for public chanting in the streets in hobgoblin, ghost and witchy types of attire. I wish them well. But I am the unlucky one to not participate in any of such fun, be it satanic and ghoulish.
My day began with being dressed as usual — in monk attire, and doing something. Every morning since coming this week we have good discussions during the Bhagavatam class. Also this morning was unique because a couple, married, and with kids, took vows today as new initiates. Gaurav accepted the Sanskrit name, Guru Gauranga. His wife, Shepali, took the name Satvika which means “pure” or “goodness.” We congratulate them for being so happy and progressive. They are a great couple to add to the enthusiastic admin team in ISKCON Vancouver.
Now, what did come across as slightly resembling the event of the dead was the appearance of a beautiful pumpkin carved to suit our Conscious Kirtan Workshop. Artist Kelly brought her piece of artwork. Instead of carving a usual jack-o'-lantern she showed up with something very holy. She cut an image of Chaitanya dancing with “Hare Krishna, Hare Rama” insignia to each of his sides, lit up from inside. That was the centre piece of our presentation on the importance of chanting as we emphasized the need to follow our guru who gave so many directions on the ancient practice of kirtan.
What a gorgeous day it was!
