Halifax, Nova Scotia
It is natural that young families migrating to North America from a Hindu background, origins India, will gravitate to the culture of ISKCON. Utsav, from Gujarat in western India, and who’s fairly new to Canada, came to the Halifax Airport to pick up myself and Nityananda, and so we got to talking. By profession, he’s a cook, so he comes with a useful skill. What attracts a young person from the ancient land of Bharat to the Hare Krishna movement is the atmosphere of bhakti, the love of God through its fine worship of the Krishna deity, the prasadam food, the ecstatic chanting, the training and learning sessions, and perhaps one of the items that is most important is each other. In other words, the friendship bonding is a strong ‘selling point’. People of similar mindsets just love to be together and share in the personal reciprocal culture.
What about all the other folks – the locals? Is there something in it for them when we speak about any relevance for them in the matter of practicing mantra meditation and the like? They like it.
At Mahone Bay, our local brahmin, Yogendra, arrived for a peacefully driven chant. The venue was the old school home of 1914. The place has been beautifully renovated, and attendees were all from the area, mostly middle aged to senior status. You wouldn’t think that yoga chant and dance would be on their radar.
There is something all attractive about the Krishna culture that captures both east and west.
