Vamana - A Miracle Story

Vamana is one of those outstanding avatars respected in the Vedic tradition. By astrological
calculations, He appeared on this day. On these last two consecutive days, a swami a day
expressed his appreciation for this dwarf brahmin boy. Bhaktivinode Swami and Janardhan
Swami took turns to tell of His glories.
Vamana turned up at a sacrifice conducted by Monarch Bali. He was a short dwarf, carried a
parasol to block the sun. A brahmin thread was draped diagonally across the chest. A deer skin was tied around for a lower cloth held somewhat by a rope. Clogs from wood, became his footwear. Bali was fascinated by this form of a clean young and innocent boy.
“I can offer you practically the world,” said the affluent manner of a monarch. Vamana’s remark was candid. “Thanks but no thanks. It is hard to satisfy the senses for anyone regardless of how much facility is given.”
It was hard for Bali to hear such words fall on his ears. He was always generous with his
resources and was not accustomed to meet up with someone without greed. It was especially
brahmins he wanted to please. As miracles are common events in everyday life, if you are
seeking them, when the dwarf boy asked for a mere three steps of land, a distance of about a
meter or yard, Bali felt obliged, though the request sounded ridiculous, the short boy suddenly grew to a gigantic measure. He then took his three steps. He won big — the Universe and even gained the surrendered services of Bali.
