THE BEST BIRTHDAY

Saturday, August 16th, 2025

Winnipeg, Manitoba

I have not seen a happier group of people.  What makes them smile and laugh and hug and talk to one another?  Well, it’s the birthday of Krishna.  And as things were just percolating for a big bash of a different kind where all the fun was to take place, I decided to do my homework.  Let’s see if I can meet neighbours and make friends.  I came upon a Bangladeshi woman with her mom and her two children.  They were clearly Muslims, judging by their names.  The lady sure knew Chaitanya, the great monk for mantras.  She spoke about Him in a sweet way.  “Please come join us tonight!” I warmly urged.

I met Lacey next door.  She maintains an outdoor nativity scene of Jesus reflecting Christmas, the event where Jesus’ birth is celebrated.  I told her what all the excitement was about.  “We are honouring the birth of Krishna.  Please come for the exotic food at 6 PM?”

A Filipino couple behind our new temple also became curious.  “It is the day to remember Krishna for His birthday.”  This couple was young enough and mature enough to say they wish us a Happy Birthday of Krishna.  They mentioned to not over-park the vehicles when they come.

The party went in full swing in Bascoe Park.  A well-orchestrated fire yagna took place.  Stage events with plays and dances grabbed attention.  There was food.  There were some complaints.  “The speakers were too loud,” said the police.  They ate prasadam (blessed food) and went away happy.

Dignitaries came from the government sector.  They felt the bliss and broke the traditional coconut used in such ceremonies to honour the Great.
