ON THE ROCK

St. John's, Newfoundland

We found ourselves in Newfoundland, which many people refer to as "The Rock.” Amala Harinam from Montreal, and I flew to this location, a massive island. My friend Jan, took us to the rock upon the rock, at Signal Hill where the first wireless message, telegram, was successfully transmitted by inventor Marconi, on a trans-Atlantic venture in 1901. With the sun gloriously on our frames we met the friendly people of this province and even a couple that just got married. The “Newfies,” as they are affectionately called, are so easy to approach.

We discovered the same, when later in the day, Sheeshan brought us to Topsail Beach, another popular spot for tourists and locals. We were warmly accepted by the many folks that started campfires by the coastline. Heads turned when we began our kirtan equipped with drum and cymbals. People are in the party mood. It's Friday. The weekend’s begun. And that glorious sun that pulled everyone outside, was readying itself for the setting.

I am very proud of our small community here which has potential to grow devotionally. The next day will be the second annual Chariot Fest which will hopefully awaken a few souls along the way as we pull a modest cart with Krishna deities atop the conveyance as we chant the maha mantra for the Lord's pleasure and His citizens. Mind you, not everyone will appreciate fully what our small event is all about, but we will be singing and dancing, a result of the joyous season.

This Chariot Fest, whether grande or petite, is expanding on Canadian soil and it has been taking hold in many countries. In its own way it adds joy and purpose to people's hearts.
