CONNECTING WITH THE CBC

Wednesday, August 20th, 2025

Iqaluit, Nunavut

From a veranda, a preteen boy shouted out that too familiar question, “Are you a monk?”

“Yes!” I shouted back in answer to his excited tone.  We were too far from each other to stoke up a meaningful conversation.

The major interaction for the day in a true conversation, a back and forth, was with Eli.  It was Eli who appeared to be a major anchor with CBC.  For this remote northern region, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation appears to be a monopoly for audio and video news.   Vasey and I walked into the main office, told our story that The Walking Monk was in town with his musical friends and were up for a presentation at Franco Hall on Thursday night.

Eli was enthusiastic about the unique kind of human-interest story about walking many countries on the theme “Tales from Trails.”  Spontaneously, the interview took place followed by Jai’s expert drumming on the mrdangam drum.  It felt like the good old days when on the marathon – radio and TV stations ran toward something different.

With Eli’s expertise in questioning and our part two of the day, hiking (between emails and phone calls) by the Sylvia Grinnell River, it was an excellent 24-hour timeslot.  I squeezed in a Gita Zoom call with South African devotees on the topic of guru qualifications.  I trailed off with a group a second time touching nature.  Pristine is the word to describe air and water.

Only four to five years ago, however, gas and water merged together and contaminated the community.  It was big on the news.  However, almost all of it got cleaned up and we are back to enjoying nature’s great bounties.
