Kishor Mani Is celebrating his 20th wedding anniversary with a kirtan fest at his home. He got happily involved by calling some of the more noted leaders of kirtan (musical mantra meditation), So I agreed to the initial contact. On the list of fine musicians was Bhakti Brngha Govinda Swami (BB Govinda), Akinchana, and the Bhakti Brothers, Ananda and Yogi. They came all the way over from Vrindavan, India, to grace us with their presence on this first of a six day event.
A part of the major fest was an installation of Radha Krishna deities, and that was held on this day, and it takes off from there. Lunch was great, not only for the nice prasadam, but also for spending quality time with BB Govinda Swami. We go back to the early 70s. I met him on Christmas in ’72 in Sudbury, Ontario. He, along with four other monks from Canada, were visiting town on their mission when I bumped into them and asked them to stay in my apartment as they had no place for accommodation that night.
On that occasion, I received quite an injection of bhakti (devotion) from these five fellows. They changed my life, really. I had been looking for the truth for some time. I liked everything about what they were saying, including their endorsement of a plant-based diet. I was soaking up all they were seeing and tried not to show it. The only thing that was a turn off was their style of dress, although this was secondary.
I was intrigued about the fact that BB Govinda Swami was born and raised in Tennessee and was close to Elvis Presley when he was young.
