A MONK AND HIS DREAMS

One of my favourite monks of all time is someone whom we honour today, as it’s the anniversary of his passing.  His name is Madhavendra Puri.  He was responsible for sharing the strong feelings of bhakti or bhava, ecstasies in love for God.  The events that gave him some recognition have much to do with dreams, their power, and how to respond to such encounters.  Those dreams were of a spiritual nature, profound interactions with the Supreme.  Krishna appeared in his dreams on different occasions.  They were often instructive dreams and personal.

Madhavendra had quite the leadership qualities.  For instance, Krishna spoke to him in a dream and told him he was buried, hidden in the jungle, and he wanted to be rescued.  On the strength of that message, Madhavendra arranged for an entire village to go on a major search.  Once the deity was discovered, all made an arrangement to install the deity on top of the famous Govardhan Hill.

In so many ways this great monk was selfless and being surrendered to His Lord.  Once he carried a very weighty bag full of sandalwood for an incredible distance in service to Krishna.  In any event, there is much to say about this saint who gave guidance as guru to so many people at his time in the 15th century.

My walking today was in his honour.  Spring is in the air.  The day was just fine; sunny and mild.  It’s spring break.  So many young people out there walking the streets at this extended recess time.  While trekking along on Bloor Street with Karuna Sindhu, I pondered in thought.  Hardly a person on this sidewalk is aware of the monk and his dreams, Madhavendra.  I wish they knew.  What benefit that would bring them, learning of such monks.
