St. John's Newfoundland
I was compelled to write about Newfoundland, affectionately known by locals as The Rock. Here is the poem:
THE ROCK (In Reference To Newfoundland)
There is a passive passion about ‘The Rock’
Where there’s always a trail for a hiker’s walk
And where (affectionately) Newfies bear thick skin
Below the flight of seabirds, gulls, and puffin
But under a blast of occasional starlings
Are a breed of sweetie pie darlings
Hearts shaped by winds, rain, and nature harsh
And boulders, ponds, and peatland marsh
From the top of Signal Hill there lies
Views of dreams nothing short of surprise
What to speak of Cape Spear, Cornerbrook, Gander
Gross Morne Park, all of stunning grandeur
Trees of fir, spruce, larch, and birch
Soft toppings to a very rugged earth
Plentiful fruit-of-the-sea on the coast
On land – bears and moose – something to boast
George St. in St. John’s is the party place
Stronger than tea, drinks are in kegs or a case
For the eyes – colours red, yellow, blue, green – to look
These are the charm homes from a story book
And for the ears – “How ya gettin’ on?”
“Come from away?” “Yes, b’ay!” and on and on
A beloved superintendent overlooks The Rock
Casting lighthouse rays over this special spot
