Toronto, Ontario
Yesterday was the Birth Anniversary of Vamana, the dwarf avatar who grew to a gigantic scale. Here’s the story.
He entered the crowd
No trace of being proud
Adorable, confident, youthful
Dress code? That of a sadhu
His parasol blocked the sun
And clogs to walk, not run
Speculations about him went for
A prodigy? An avatar?
The young lad appeared smart
Using head, feet, and heart
He entered the place of ritual
The place of soul and the physical
Tyrant Bali gave all due respect
Though the boy was small, he did not reject
“Your wish is my command”
“My request - three steps of land”
“I can give you so much more”
“Too much become a bore”
“Very well then, take the three
It makes no sense to me”
The boy grew to be a cosmic giant
The king’s guru was defiant
“I warned you of those tricks
Incognito Vishnu getting his kicks”
The king was very determined
A promise to a boy brahmin
Was binding within the tradition
It is not myth or fiction
Amazed he was to see the first stride
Which was practically very wide
Covering half the universe
The second step was worse
The whole universe was gone
The small, now tall boy had won
King Bali thought all was his
The cosmos he’ll now truly miss
The questions still remained
The king, stressed and strained
Where to place the step number three?
Looking up he called in all humility
“I surrender - place on my head
I lost my kingdom, have you instead
You are the Vishnu I can’t avoid
Lower that foot, I’m not annoyed
My ego requires crushing
I need to get some trust in
I thought I owned all the real estate”
A humble Bali felt truly great
