SURE BEATS ANY BOOZE PARTY

St. John's Newfoundland

From St. John’s edge at Mount Pearl, I followed the Great Trail to Topsail meeting walkers and runners, some with pets.  It was Bob, the Bahai follower, who picked me up and transported me to the Hindu Temple in Penny Lane.  There I was greeted by members of familiar faces, happy to see me, and likewise.

Services had begun with some puja in offering to the deity, Sri Krishna.  Then I was given the floor to sing and speak.  From Chapter 11, I spoke from verses 16-20 featuring elements of God’s the Universal Form.  I’m always satisfied withing when the parishioners are attentive and laughting.  We engaged them also in chanting while moving their bodies to the rhythm.  Whenever I notice Bangla women in the crowd, I urge the practice of ululating which heightens the intensity.  The management was pleased and encouraged a future visit.  Our own cook whom we address as ‘Pujari-ji’, churned out a marvellous feast.

From the temple, Nityananda and I made it back to the Battery at the city’s harbour just in time for a radio interview with Kate Spears from Memorial University.  She was keen to know about what brings me to town.

“Primarily, I’m here to encourage our growing Hare Krishna community.”  I like interviews.

Finally, at our apartment at the Battery, our whole congregation packed the place.  Grant came.  On this day, his 69th birthday, we celebrated.  The next-door neighbour, Timothy, also come to get absorbed in the next enthusiastic kirtan.  It sure beats any booze party that I have ever seen.
