Anuttama, ISKCON’s Communication Director, said over the phone, “It’s a first!” referring to dressing a TV anchor with a dhoti. As a way to promote this weekend’s festival “Chariot Fest” organizers of the event went to Global TV where Paul Brothers, the morning show anchor man agreed to try on a monk’s lower and upper robes. My brahmachari assistant, Vishesh, kindly did the honour, and to the delight of Paul, the task was done.
Anyway, that’s how the day began. My next step was to visit Victoria Hospital to catch up with an old friend in his 80s. Dr Shankar from Guyana ended there for reasons of frequently falling. When I met him in the Lettuce Eatery with his daughter Sundari Lila, and he was chipper.
“Are you still listening to your idol, Harry Belafonte?” I asked, knowing he was a fan of the crooner era. He immediately broke out into one of his songs, and then a popular bhajan. Shankar is a supporter of our efforts in Halifax, but I doubt that his condition will allow him to attend the Saturday festival. But that’s okay, his heart is sent to Jagannatha, the Universal Lord, who is the main star of the show.
Speaking of stars, this evening was the first of serious anticipated practice for the play, Big Fish, Little Fish. We have a good cast. I’m quite excited. On board is Arina, from Kazakhstan, who graduated from York University in Theatre Arts. It’s always fun to watch a play grow from its infancy stage to its full development. Every project can flower from its dream level to fruition if you put your mind to it.
