Calgary, Alberta
The cold snap of Calgary hasn’t let up just yet. With wind chill factoring in, we are looking at -42 Celsius. While that sounds depressing, the sun shines all day on the optimistic snow. Everything is bright outside.
Yet I feel the pressing need to get out and move about, not in the out-of-doors but to the gym called Genesis. I am staying with Radha Madhava, who was my walking partner in Fiji, and he kindly took us to the facility to walk for one hour. On our way, you could hardly see a pedestrian what to speak of a cyclist. Even a motorist thinks twice about bringing out his machine. The roads are slippery.
The creatures that are out are the magpies, and if we looked more meticulously, we might have found some of those jackrabbits and hares that turn white in the winter. I didn’t see any.
The walk at Genesis was so liberating, but it was awfully quiet except for some of the soft-sounding ’60’s music. Neil Young came on with “Heart of Gold” and Van Morrison with “Brown-eyed Girl”.
While weather is what it is, members of our Calgary community at RMCC came by to honour the diksha initiation of Rita, who is stricken with cancer. She was blessed with the name Radharani. It was so sweet to see the family around her in her wheel-chaired condition, and it was super sweet to have everyone there circumambulating her and her husband, Hatish, at the final kirtan, chanting session. Followers of bhakti yoga make it a point to celebrate even in the most challenging of times.
