DAY OF SMILES AND NOT

Durban, South Africa

There are lovely people in South Africa. One Canadian years ago told me, “These people's hearts are honey coated.” That's a real compliment. I heard it long before I ever stepped foot in this great land.

So now I'm here on my 23rd year visiting Durban for their Chariot Fest. Participants are sweet singing, swinging along in praise of Jagannatha, the main honored guest. There are happy faces on people just like the Lord of the Universe, Himself.

How is it that this country with all its sweetness is ridden with so much crime, in fact, one of the highest rated in the world?

I also got to see another side of life here. Before I engaged in the Dance Masta program at the Bhakti Cloud tent, I went for that much needed walk by the beachfront. Although it's a holiday, Good Friday, not all holidayers are so chipper. I noticed people in garb representing a religious culture other than mine were not reciprocating with my smiles, nods, or hellos.  Other folks I passed by were nice.

Our guru, Prabhupada, from what I read, was always the best greeter. His smile, his greetings were on par. He exhibited ultra kindness.

I believe that kindness and a smile are anti-depressants. They can bring down the level of crime and nastiness. Those gestures can make a big difference in the now very disruptive world. Most people should have a look at the positive images of Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra who ride those gorgeous chariots at the Chariot Fest time.
