Las Cuevas, Trinidad

Las Cuevas, which means ‘the caves’, are found on the north shore of Trinidad. It is one of the favourite beaches in the country and becomes a regular spot for our devotee community. It is here Vaishnavas meet for fun, sun, sand, and water sports. Coconuts are plenty. The best part – each other. That special bonding is what all great spiritualists speak about. Sangha is the word.

After water sports, we ate, took to the ‘Double’ which Trinidad is known for. We chanted and then chose from the Gita 15.15 which breaks into two messages. No. 1 is the presence of Paramatma, the Divine in the heart. No. 2 speaks of the channel to God — the Vedas.

There we were in an ancient, raw, ascetic setting, caves and all. It’s not perfect though — flies and fleas can get on your nerves by nibbling in the skin. You just can’t get too complacent. Nature won’t let you.

Another destination today, Chinchin, was the location of Lokaguru, a man who is in the spice business. I was about to address the crowd when a call came in, “My father passed away this morning,” said Sudhama in a sad tone. “Condolences! My group here will chant right now for Garuda Vahan, your dad.”

The crowd somehow knew the call was a serious one. We dedicated the program in his honour. There was a special energy that pervaded the large hall in the house. It was a celebration of life.
