KRISHNA PROTECTS WOMEN AND CHILDREN

draupadi was a very strong woman

a queen of character, a good human

at the darkest hour, by the hair she was dragged

by a brutish man whose intelligence lagged

in front of an assembly of royals

when bravery knew only withdrawals

he pulled at her blood-stained dress

attempting to augment her distress

leaving her fully dishonoured and exposed

humiliated and devoid of her clothes

not letting the fiend have his satisfaction

krishna appeared timely in swift reaction

mystically he supplied unlimited fabric

in a manner that was simply classic

the queen chanted his name in surrender

the assembly sat shocked at this act of splendour

the abductor, exhausted at the fabric pull

was embarrassed with only a cloth handful

draupadi was appeased, feeling protected

krishna’s kindness is what he always projected

heroism lingers in the tales of abundant stories

found in the epic pages of lives in bharat’s glories

in the belly of uttara lie the last of the yadu

fate had it that her child was not yet due

when uttara ran hastily toward krishna divine

her instinct knew her unborn’s life was on the line

sensing that the enemy was targeting her child

a weapon of fire, brahmastra, had run wild

the accuracy level with the aim was high

asvattama, the antagonist, caused her to cry

in an earnest appeal over a life-and-death matter

krishna was the ‘go-to’ as ultimate psychiater

her spirit of self-sacrifice was commendable

“let my life be taken, i am expendable

let my son live a life of resilience

of joy, of health and brilliance”

krishna’s response was very immediate

a response to asvattama’s deviance

krishna projected into her womb, giving shelter

protecting the embryo in the spirit to help her

after the devastating kurukshetra war

widows were grieving, emotions torn

in the search for identifying their dead

their husbands, sons, granddads, all bled

in the air of greed aftermath and a sky of vultures

victims of the battle played out their culture

in the vacancy of men, breathing nil

and in an atmosphere echoing the message “kill”

krishna offered his backing, there to console

each and every woman who lost their mating soul

“what a loss!” was the sound of bereavement

how to consider this pile of corpses an achievement?

grieving women, the likes of the very best

draupadi, kunti, gandhari, viewing those at rest

krishna’s absolute comforting presence

was his expression of deep condolence

including his sensitivity towards enemies’ widows

a model behaviour opening doors and windows

for those of us devoid of kindness and care

krishna stands up for women, children, and those in despair
