The Annex, Toronto
I love it when Brian Carwana arranges to come to the temple. We have a long-standing relationship given that he was born in the same town as myself – Chatham. Although I am the older of the two, and we only got to know each other after we took to our individual vocations, we are both spirituals. I am a swami in an international organization, and he is a leader in a religious study group.
Today he brought 20 students, mostly from the USA – Tennessee and Nebraska. Well, Nebraska rings a bell. I walked through there in 2016/17. For those who came from there, the names of the towns were rather obscure, small places, I imagine. But there was Omaha. One chap hails from there. I remember walking those parts in Nebraska, boy it was hot and humid. They were night walks from 9:30 pm to 3 am.
The group of students raised good questions. Near the end, one of the group members asked about magic mushrooms, wanting to know if such substances can trigger or augment spirituality. My answer was not blunt, but almost. I explained that our founder, guru, Prabhupada, was so accepting of people of varying practices and addictions, but he did lay the grounds for serious students. His experience tells that the real ecstasy is a natural one. His message was to get high on God through the singing, dancing, eating, philosophizing, and serving.
The group from down South was sweet indeed. They appreciated what was said and done.
