Edmonton, Alberta
It was on our bucket list to dip into the cool waters of Lake Sylvan at 5:30 am. The weather report told us of 30-plus degree weather the two previous days. The heat spell was definitely on, but then the forecast changed. The latest report revealed low temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius, so we changed our minds about going to the lake.
Despite the cool air coming off the lake, a Russian family and Fijian family met at a beach shelter. We made a commitment to meet a local man in his late fifties. As he put it, "I'm a seeker. I looked at the Abrahamic religions, looked at your blog, Prabhupada's books."
Basically, our new friend finds Krishna consciousness to be a good fit. I believe he was relieved when I told him he didn't have to renounce the world. I suggested he could check out an occasional Krishna conscious retreat. It became evident that his family isn't all that supportive of his new find, so here I expressed he could keep everything low key and keep private what works for him.
For a summer's day, it was indeed chilly. I was feeling sorry for our driver, Satyavrata, whose lower lip was shivering. With duties ahead, the bunch of us sitting under a park shelter decided we had to terminate a lively discussion. When meeting someone new, I pray that he/she will be happy to stay in touch and retain a bit of what I tell them. It's always a good policy to encourage reading and getting inspired by the process of surrender.
